Under Darius, the Persian Empire was at its greatest extent. It reached as far as India. In the West, Greece was always a thorn to Darius. The Persians were defeated by the Greeks at the battle of Marathon in 490 B.C. Later, Alexander the Great conquered the Persian Empire in 330 B.C.
