Jesus

Background of the Transfiguration

After Jesus had done many miracles in the Galilee region he went into the surrounding territories and over to the cities of Tyre and Sidon along the coast. He also journeyed over to the cities of the Decapolis and finally up to Caesarea Philippi in the far north near Mount Hermon. He then asked his disciples who they thought he was and as they were guessing Peter said "Thou art the Christ (Messiah) son of the living God. Around six days after Jesus revealed to his disciples that he was "The Christ, the son of the living God" he took Peter, James, and John up into a high mountain to pray and was transfigured before them. They were heavy with sleep but when they woke up they saw His face shining like the sun, and his garments white as snow. They also saw Moses and Elijah talking with him and they became filled with fear, and as the two men were parting from them Peter spoke, "Master it is good for us to be here, let us make 3 tabernacles, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." As he was speaking a bright cloud overshadowed them and a voice spoke out of the cloud, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him." When the disciples heard this they were terrified and fell on their faces, and Jesus came and touched them and the vision went away and they saw only Jesus. As they were coming down from the mountain Jesus said to them, "Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.

Peter Reminisces Back to this Event

2 Peter 1:16-18 - For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

Definition of the Transfiguration

Jesus, whose glory was veiled in flesh, became unveiled to those 3 disciples and they beheld his glory. The Greek word Metamorphao means to transform or transfigure. Both Matthew and Mark use the same word metamorphao in Matt 17:2 and Mark 9:2). Luke did not mention the word transfiguration but he said that the appearance of his face changed (Luke 9:29). Matthew said that his face shined as the sun (Matt 17:2), and Mark said that his clothing became as light, exceeding white as snow (Mark 9:3). What had actually happened was that Jesus, whose glory was veiled in flesh, became unveiled to the 3 disciples and they beheld his glory, the same glory that will be seen when he returns to set up his kingdom which will never pass away.

Transformation of the Believer

Paul also uses this word metamorphao to describe the transformation of the believer in Christ (Rom 12:2 and 2 Cor 3:18). Paul also said that the body of the Christian is the Temple of the Holy Spirit who dwells inside (1 Cor 6:19).

Location of the Transfiguration

Matthew 17:1 - After six days, Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain by themselves. In the 4th century AD a tradition was established that Mount Tabor was the scene of the transfiguration and it was referred to as the Mount of Transfiguration, and over the next couple centuries there were three churches built on Mount Tabor. Modern scholarship has changed its opinion regarding Mount Tabor because of recent archaeological excavations. There were buildings and a city on top of Mount Tabor during the time of Jesus, which would interrupt the solitude mentioned in the gospel accounts. The more probable location would be Mount Hermon, which is relatively close to Caesarea Philippi where Jesus revealed who he was to his disciples.

Jesus Face Shining Like the Sun

Matthew 17:2 - He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his garments became as white as the light. Matthew describing the Transfiguration said that the face of Jesus shone like the sun. Luke makes a note that while Jesus was praying "the appearance of his face was altered" (Luke 9:29). This is no doubt a description of the glory that belongs to Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit could be visibly seen shining through the body of Jesus. Even Peter mentions this later in his life when he said we were eyewitnesses of his Majesty.

Jesus Garments Became White As Light

Matthew 17:2 - He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his garments became as white as the light. While describing the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ Matthew said that his "garments became as white as the light." The glory of God was shining through Jesus Christ so that his clothing was so bright that it could only be described as light or as a flash of lightning (Luke 9:29). In the gospel of Mark he said that his clothing was glistening, exceedingly white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth can whiten them (Mark 9:3). They saw the glory of Jesus Christ that will be revealed when he returns to this earth.

The Shekinah Glory

Exodus 40:34-35 - Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and The LORDs glory filled the tabernacle. Moses was not able to enter into the Tent of Meeting, because the cloud stayed on it, and The glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. This is the same Shekinah glory that appeared in the tabernacle above the mercy seat and between the cherubim. It is certain that this is what Stephen saw when he was being stoned (Acts 7:55-56), and what Paul the apostle saw when he (Saul of Tarsus) was on the road that led to Damascus and saw the glory of Jesus Christ and fell from his horse blinded (Acts 9), and what John the disciple saw on the Isle of Patmos (Revelation 1:16).This same Jesus will be manifested in great glory when he returns again to the earth to set up his kingdom (Matthew 24:30). It is interesting that in the prayer of Jesus he was praying to the father and mentioned the glory I had with you before the world began (John 17:5). It is a true statement that the glory of Christ was veiled in flesh, and just as the Ark of the Covenant in all of its glory was covered with an unbecoming badger skin (Num 4:5), so the glory of Christ was covered with the outward appearance of an average Jewish man. John 1:14 - The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Moses and Elijah at the Transfiguration

Luke 9:30-31 - And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. When the 3 disciples were fully awake they were terrified by the dazzling brightness of the glory of God shining through Christ, and suddenly they saw Moses and Elijah appearing in glory and speaking with Jesus about his upcoming decease in Jerusalem. Moses and Elijah were the representatives of the Law and the Prophets. In the Jewish culture the Law and the Prophets meant the sum total of Gods Scriptures from beginning to end. In other words Moses and Elijah were witnesses to the glory of Christ, and what was about to happen soon in Jerusalem that would change the world. Everything was in fulfillment of the promises given in the Scriptures. Jesus was preparing his disciples to continue his work after he dies and is raised from the dead, and seeing these two witnesses testifying to who Jesus was and what Jesus was about to accomplish in Jerusalem would strengthen them when they see him die, and also strengthen them for their great mission of spreading the good news to the world. Note: The word decease or departure is Greek from the Hebrew Exodus and is reminiscent of the Exodus in Egypt when Moses instructed the Hebrews to slay the unblemished Lamb and strike or sprinkle the blood on their lintel and doorposts of their homes and death would Pass Over them. They were to do it in haste for they were departing that night from the land of Egypt and the glory cloud would lead the way to the promised land. The Passover Lamb was a type of Jesus who was slain for the sins of the world, and anyone who applies HIS blood will escape the real death, the second death, eternal death, which will pass over them, the real Exodus. The promised land is a type of heaven which the Bible calls The New Jerusalem when God will create a new heaven and a new earth where righteousness will dwell for eternity.

A Bright Cloud Overshadowed Them

Matthew 17:5-7 - While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. The cloud that overshadowed them was the glory of God, the same cloud that smote the Egyptians, that led the children of Israel through the Red Sea, that defeated the chariots of Pharaoh, that appeared above the Tabernacle, and in the Holy of Holies. The same cloud which led Israel into the promised land. When Moses was on the Holy Mountain there was a thick cloud and Moses entered into the cloud and heard the voice of God (Ex 19:9). This bright cloud that overshadowed the disciples was terrifying to them for when they saw it and heard the voice that came out of the cloud they fell on their faces and were shaking in horror.

The Voice of God Spoke

The voice of God said, This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased, hear ye him. Just like Moses and Elijah representing the body of the Scriptures were witnesses to the glory and work of Jesus, so the Father is testifying to the person and message of Jesus Christ. Its interesting that the words that God spoke from the cloud This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased were clearly reinforcing the words spoken by God in the Old Testament about His Servant, the Messiah: Isaiah 42:1 - Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth. When God spoke he also said Hear ye him which was also reinforcing the Old Testament in the word spoken by God to Moses in a prophecy about the Messiah in Deuteronomy 18:18-20: Deuteronomy 18:18-19 - I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, [that] whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

Resurrection of the Dead from Catholic Apologetics

"By 'resurrection' Christians do not mean only the return to life in the body of a dead human being; it means taking on a completely new existence. We believe that the souls of all those who have died will be reunited to their bodies; but those bodies will have different characteristics. We Catholic Christians profess this belief often when we pray the Apostles Creed: I believe in ... the resurrection of the body. In the Nicene Creed, we profess: We look for the resurrection of the dead. "

Jesus Before Annas and Caiaphas by Alfred Edersheim

IT was not a long way that they led the bound Christ. Probably through the same gate by which He had gone forth with His disciples after the Paschal Supper, up to where, on the slope between the Upper City and the Tyropoeon, stood the well-known Palace of Annas. There were no idle saunterers in the streets of Jerusalem at that late hour, and the tramp of the Roman guard must have been too often heard to startle sleepers, or to lead to the inquiry why that glare of lamps and torches. and Who was the Prisoner, guarded on that holy night by both Roman soldiers and servants of the High-Priest. If every incident in that night were not of such supreme interest, we might dismiss the question as almost idle, why they brought Jesus to the house of Annas, since he was not at that time the actual High-Priest. That office now devolved on Caiaphas, his son-in-law, who, as the Evangelist significantly reminds us, [a St. John xviii. 14.] had been the first to enunciate in plain words what seemed to him the political necessity for the judicial murder of Christ. [b xi. 50.] There had been no pretence on his part of religious motives or zeal for God; he had cynically put it in a way to override the scruples of those old Sanhedrists by raising their fears. What was the use of discussing about forms of Law or about that Man? it must in any case be done; even the friends of Jesus in the Council, as well as the punctilious observers of Law, must regard His Death as the less of two evils. He spoke as the bold, unscrupulous, determined man that he was; Sadducee in heart rather than by conviction; a worthy son-in-law of Annas.

Matthew the Tax Collector

Levi was a custom-house official. The Talmud distinguishes between the tax collector and the custom house official. The Gabbai collected the regular real estate and income taxes and the poll tax; the Mockhes, the duty on imports, exports, toll on roads, bridges, the harbor, the town tax, and a great multiplicity of other variable taxes on an unlimited variety of things, admitting of much abuse and graft. The very word Mockhes was associated with the idea -of oppression and injustice. The taxes in Judea were levied by publicans, who were Jews, and therefore hated the more as direct officials of the heathen Roman power. Levi occupied the detestable position of a publican of the worst type --a little Mockhes, who himself stood in the Roman custom-house on the highway connecting Damascus and Ptolemais, and by the sea where all boats plied between the domains of Antipas and Philip. The name "publican," which applied to these officials, is derived from the :Latin word publicanus a man who did public duty. The Jews detested these publicans not only on account of their frequent abuses and tyrannical spirit, but because the very taxes they were forced to collect by the Roman government were a badge of servitude and a constant reminder that God had forsaken His people and land in spite of the Messianic hope, founded on many promises of the ancient prophets. The publicans were classed by the people with harlots, usurers, gamblers, thieves, and dishonest herdsmen, who lived hard, lawless lives. They were just "licensed robbers" and "beasts in human shape."

Evidence of the Resurrection by Josh McDowell

After more than 700 hours of studying this subject, I have come to the conclusion that the resurrection of Jesus Christ is either one of the most wicked, vicious, heartless hoaxes ever foisted on the minds of human beings--or it is the most remarkable fact of history. Here are some of the facts relevant to the resurrection: Jesus of Nazareth, a Jewish prophet who claimed to be the Christ prophesied in the Jewish Scriptures, was arrested, was judged a political criminal, and was crucified. Three days after His death and burial, some women who went to His tomb found the body gone. In subsequent weeks, His disciples claimed that God had raised Him from the dead and that He appeared to them various times before ascending into heaven. From that foundation, Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire and has continued to exert great influence down through the centuries.

The Fulfillment Of Prophecy

"The fulfillment of the prophecies of the Bible is a vast subject. In fact, the Messianic prophecies alone have provided enough material for the publication of many books. Other books have been written solely about the Old Testament prophecies concerning certain cities or about certain world empires, while still others consider the fulfillment of Biblical prophecies in the twentieth century. Some authors have identified more than 300 Old Testament passages that are cited by the New Testament as having been fulfilled by Jesus Christ."

Jesus is not the only one who attests to His divinity. All of the Scriptures attest to it. In fact, the Hebrew prophets expected the Messiah to be God, and that He would walk on the earth as a man. He received worship, and said "if you do not believe that "I AM" you will die in your sins."

Problems With The Denial Of Christ's Claims

"If Christ's claims were false, then he could not have been a good man, since he thought of Himself as God. It is interesting that, throughout all of history, Jesus has been considered a model of humility. Yet, if He was not whom He claimed to be, then He was the very opposite of humble."

THE VERIFIABILITY OF HISTORY

THE VERIFIABILITY OF HISTORY: EVERY EVENT HAS COLLATERAL CIRCUMSTANCES AND CONSEQUENCES. "The life of Christ made an indelible imprint on all of humanity, yet that this should have happened at all is in itself a miracle. "That this man of poor and uncultivated stock should remake the basis of philosophy and open out to the world of the future an unknown territory of thought; that this simple son of a declining people, born in an obscure district in a small Roman province, this nameless Jew like all those others despised by the Procurators of Caesar, should speak with a voice that was to sound above those of the Emperors themselves, these are the most surprising facts of history."3 In our own day and age we live with these consequences of the life of Christ. Whether we like it or not, he made an indelible mark upon all of humanity. If we deny his existence, not only do we do violence to the fabric of history, but we deny what is presently the case."

Julius Caesar, after defeating the Gaul's and eliminating his political enemies, returned to Rome where he received the greatest triumphal celebration any Roman general had ever known. He received almost every power than an obedient Senate could confer on him. Because he arrogantly took up the powers of dictator, some of his close friends, including Brutus, joined in a plot to assassinate him in 44 BC, on the Ides of March, the 15th. Bible History Online.

Rome - AUGUSTUS (27 BC-14 AD)

Civil war broke out after Julius Caesar's assassination. Two of the assassins, Brutus and Cassius, led one side. Octavian, Caesar's adopted 18-year-old son, and Mark Antony, one of Caesar's lieutenants, opposed their bid for power. In 2 quick battles, the assassins were crushed. The victory catapulted young Octavian"" or Augustus, as he was later called"" into the political limelight. THE SYNAGOGUE

The first synagogues may have been built by Jews held captive far from the temple during the Babylonian Exile in the sixth century B.C., but synagogues were important religious and social institutions in the time of Jesus. The original Greek word synagogue means merely "a place of meeting." In the Jewish world synagogues were second only to the temple in Jerusalem itself as religious institutions. They also served as schools of religious instruction and communal halls for civic functions under the direction of a council of elders. Bible History Online.

The Temple

HEROD'S TEMPLE. Begun in 20 BC, the construction of the temple was one of Herod's most ambitious projects. The old temple mount first had to be cleared and enlarged to about twice its original size. The new area was roughly 1000 by 1500 feet, girded by a massive retaining wall of huge fitted stones, each more than 15 feet long and 13 feet thick. As Solomon had done earlier, Herod imported the best stone masons and architects from Phoenicia to direct the construction. Only the finest materials were used: cedar from Lebanon, the purest marble and limestone and the finest gold. Bible History Online.

In her own domain, a woman's religious and social status was high, but in the eyes of the Law she was inferior, being coupled with minors and slaves in the rabbinical writings of the Mishnah. In the period between the writing of the Old and New Testaments HEBREW was replaced as the everyday language of the Jews by Aramaic. Crucifixion in Antiquity - The Jewish Roman World of Jesus by Joe Zias. "Undoubtedly, one of the cruelest and most humiliating forms of punishment in the ancient world was, according to ancient sources, crucifixion. Zias cites references from Josephus, Plutarch, Rufus, and others. Joe Zias was the Curator of Archaeology/Anthropology for the Israel Antiquities Authority from 1972 to 1997.
