Pre-Imperial China (c. 1600–221 BCE)

  • Xia Dynasty (c. 1600–1050 BCE): The Xia Dynasty is the first dynasty in Chinese history, but its existence is debated by scholars.
  • Shang Dynasty (c. 1600–1050 BCE): The Shang Dynasty is the first dynasty in Chinese history for which there is clear archaeological evidence. The Shang were skilled in bronzeworking and agriculture.
  • Zhou Dynasty (1046–256 BCE): The Zhou Dynasty conquered the Shang Dynasty and established a new dynasty that lasted for over eight centuries. The Zhou Dynasty was a time of great intellectual and cultural flourishing.

Imperial China (221 BCE–1912 CE)

  • Qin Dynasty (221–206 BCE): The Qin Dynasty unified China under a single ruler, Qin Shi Huang. Qin Shi Huang was a ruthless but effective ruler who implemented a number of reforms, including the construction of the Great Wall of China.

Modern China (1912–present)

  • Republic of China (1912–1949): The Republic of China was established after the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty. The Republic of China was a period of great political instability and civil war.
  • People's Republic of China (1949–present): The People's Republic of China was established after the Chinese Communist Party defeated the Kuomintang in the Chinese Civil War. The People's Republic of China has been a single-party state ruled by the Chinese Communist Party since its founding.
