JOR`DAN (river of judgment, the descender). The chief river of Israel ; rises in range of Anti-Lebanon, flows southwardly expanding into Lakes Merom and Gennesareth, a distance of two hundred miles and empties into the Dead Sea. Its current is rapid, fords are difficult, the valley narrow except opposite Jericho. Volume of water variable, breadth from seventy-five to three hundred feet and depth from three to ten feet. Though lost in the Dead Sea, its valley extends to the Gulf of Arabia.
