BE`ER-SHE`BA (well of an oath, or seventh well). One of the oldest places in the southern part of Israel. The spot still identified as Bir es Seba, well of the Lion or seven. The well was dug by Abraham, and his compact with Abimelech celebrated there with an oath ratified by the gift of seven ewe lambs. Hence the name.
