presses in Schaff's Bible Dictionary
PRESS'ES , Gen Isa.l6:10, or PRESS'FATS, Hag 2:16, were vessels or cisterns placed in the side of a hill, into which the juice of grapes flowed when it was pressed out by treading them with the feet or by pressing them with a machine. Prov 3:10; Matt 21:33. Such are now used in Persia. The upper vessel, being 8 feet square and 4 deep, is used to press out the juice, which runs into another cistern below. For an illustration of the process, see Wine. PREVENT' in the A.V., never means, as at present, "to hinder," but "to go before," "to anticipate." 1 Thess 4:15.
