jerusalem 8 crusaders and turks in Schaff's Bible Dictionary
JERUSALEM UNDER THE CRUSADERS AND TURKS In a.d. 637 the city fell into the hands of Caliph Omar, and Christians were allowed to worship there, but not to erect churches. After unusual severities upon Christians by a Turkish ruler, the Crusaders captured the city in a.d. 1099; it was reconquered, 1187, by the Mohammedans under Saladin. Thrice afterward it was in Christian hands; in 1517 it came into the possession of the Osmans, and has remained in the hands of the Turks until the present time. (A description of modern Jerusalem will be found near the close of the article.)
