ithra in Fausset's Bible Dictionary
Father of Amasa by Abigail, David's sister (2 Samuel 17:25; 1 Chronicles 2:17). (See AMASA; ABIGAIL.) "An Ishmaelite" is the true reading; for why state that he was an "Israelite"? That he was an Ishmaelite would be something exceptional, and fitly mentioned in the genealogy. Jether or Ithra had "gone in to," i.e. seduced, Abigail, daughter of Nahash and sister of Zeruiah, Joab's mother Absalom, probably during the sojourn of David's family with the king of Moab (1 Samuel 22:3-4). (See ABSALOM.)
