Acts 18:2; 27:1, 6; Heb. 13:24), like most geographical names, was differently used at different periods of history. As the power of Rome advanced, nations were successively conquered and added to it till it came to designate the whole country to the south of the Alps. There was constant intercourse between Israel and Italy in the time of the Romans.

IT'ALY , a well-known country in the south of Europe, and including the whole of the peninsula west of the Adriatic Sea. It has an area of about 100,000 square miles and a population of over 25,000,000. It is named in the N.T. only three times: (1) as the country from which Aquila and Priscilla were expelled. Acts 18:2; (2) Paul sailed for Italy, Acts 27:1; and (3) in the Epistle to the Hebrews some of that country joined in the salutations sent. Heb 13:24.
