havoth-jair in Smith's Bible Dictionary

(villages of Jair), certain villages on the east of Jordan, in Gilead or Bashan, which were taken by Jair the son of Manasseh, and called after his name. #Nu 32:41; De 3:14| In the records of Manasseh in #Jos 13:30| and 1Chr 2:23 the Havoth-jair are reckoned with other districts as making up sixty "cities." Comp. #1Ki 4:13| There is apparently some confusion in these different statements as to what the sixty cities really consisted of. No less doubtful is the number of the Havoth-Jair. In #1Ch 2:22| they are specified as twenty-three, but in #Jud 10:4| as thirty.

havoth-jair in Schaff's Bible Dictionary

HA'VOTH-JA'IR (villages of Jair), a title applied to certain villages east of the Jordan which Jair captured and held. Num 32:41; Jud 10:4. The towns of Jair are included with the 60 cities given to Manasseh, Josh 13:30; 1 Chr 2:23; but the word rendered "villages" usually means a small collection of hovels in a country place. These towns were a part of one of the revenue-districts of Solomon, 1 Kgs 4:13.
