ALPHE'US (exchange ?). 1. The father of the apostle James the Less, Matt 10:3, and husband or father of Mary. John 19:25. Others make him the uncle of Jesus by identifying him with Cleophas and calling his wife a sister of the mother of Jesus ; but it is more likely that "the sister of the mother of Jesus," mentioned John 19:25, was Salome, the mother of John, who was at the cross, according to the synoptical Gospels. Matt 27:36;Mark 15:40. 1. The father of Levi or Matthew. Mark 2:14.
