Stools

abnaim. Exodus 1:16 (Jeremiah 18:3, where "a potter's wheel" is meant); literally, two stones. A peculiar seat such as is represented on monuments of the 18th Egyptian dynasty, and is still used (Lane) by Egyptian midwives. Gesenius however refers it to the laver in which the newborn child was washed, and in which Persian kings used to cause sons of female relatives to be drowned immediately after birth (Thevenot, Itin. 2:98).
