Berothai
        

BEROTHAI or BEROTHAH. In Ezekiel 47:16 connected with Hamath and Damascus, as the northern boundary of the future inheritance of restored Israel. In 2 Samuel 8:8 a city of Zobah, taken by David from Hadadezer. Possibly identical with Berytus, now the commercial mart Beirut, called from the wells, Beeroth, still seen, bored in the rocks at Beirut. In the parallel (1 Chronicles 18:8) "Chun" is substituted. Near Beyrut are Assyrian tablets of a king (Shalmaneser), who overran Phoenicia. it is the traditional scene of the combat of Saint George and the dragon.
