But let the reader observe, that though this is introduced by the Evangelist before any of the denials of Peter are recorded, we have given reasons for concluding that probably the first two denials took place while our Lord was with Annas, and the last only during the trial before the Sanhedrim.
55. And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness
against Jesus to put him to death--Matthew
(Mt 26:59)
says they "sought false witness." They knew they could find
nothing valid; but having their Prisoner to bring before Pilate, they
behooved to make a case.
and found none--none that would suit their purpose, or make a decent
ground of charge before Pilate.
