Ashteroth-karnaim

"Ashteroth-Karnaim of the two horns" or "peaks," situated between two hills, perhaps called from the two horned goddess Astarte, the crescent moon on her head. The Rephaim's abode in the time of Chedorlaomer's invasion (Genesis 14:5). Perhaps identical with Esther Sanamein ("the two idols"), 25 miles S. of Damascus, N.W. of the Lejah. Professor Paine identifies Ashteroth-Karnaim with extensive ruins of immense basaltic blocks on a double ridge in the E. border of Gilead. The ridge is called El Birah, in front is the plain of Asherah.
