John the Baptist was born around 5 BC, and about 30 years later the Word of the Lord came to him in the Wilderness of Judea. The time had come, and John was the forerunner for the coming Messiah. The message he was given was about turning to God for forgiveness of sins, and people came from everywhere to hear his message. He was preaching about a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, and they were to prepare themselves for the coming of the Messiah. John's message was a cry for repentance, that the time was at hand for people to prepare for the coming of the King. The Bible gives a historical background regarding the time that John began preaching. It was during the 15th year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, ruler of the world, and it also reveals the men who were ruling over the land of Israel. But John's message was about the heavenly ruler who was about to appear, and the people were to prepare to meet him.

"Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. And he came into all the district around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins;" - Luke 3:1-3

"Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." - Matthew 3:1-2
